UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA 2010: The packaging industry regains
confidence in the Russian market

International exhibitors happy with the outcome of the trade fair in Moscow

Following difficult months as a result of the international economic crisis, there is renewed confidence in Russia, with increased demand for innovative packaging solutions from food & beverage producers,
confectionery manufacturer and companies in the cosmetics as well as pharmaceuticals industries. Although it’s still a long way from returning to the dynamic market of bygone days, there is a positive mood in the air. This became very apparent at UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA 2010, the international trade fair for packaging machinery, packaging production and packaging material.

Testimonials from exhibitors at UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA 2010

Gerhard Schubert GmbH
Günter Bussin, East European Sales

“This is the first time that we have exhibited here in Moscow. As far as I see it, it was the right move at the right time. We have had very good feedback and our products have fallen on fertile ground, so to speak, as the potential demand for automation engineering used in packaging processes is enormous here. Although we have sold a few of our systems to Russian customers in the past, it truly is essential to be represented at trade fairs if you really want to be noticed.”

Theegarten-Pactec GmbH & Co. KG
André Heidrich, Sales Manager

“We were kept pretty busy at our stand. You can really tell that a lot of confectionery manufacturers are on the point of something new and considering their next move.”

Heuft Systemtechnik GmbH,
Bernd Hofmann, Technical Manager

“It was especially busy on the second day. As well as our existing customers we were also able to win some new customers who bought machines straight from us.”

Langguth GmbH
Theo Aldenhövel, Sales Engineer

“The fair went really well for us, as I can safely say in the light of my extensive trade fair experience. We had a lot of highly qualified enquiries and it was significantly better than a year ago.”

Sidel
Gerrard Lenain, Country Manager

“The number of contacts we made at the fair developed very well over the course of the fair after a rather sluggish start. In comparison to last 2/2 year there is clearly movement in the Russian market.”

Bestrom,
Alexander M. Puzikov, Commercial Director

“We are very satisfied with the quality of Messe Düsseldorf’s organisation here at UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA. It is hard to say conclusively how good the final outcome of the fair has been, but it will certainly be better than last year on the bottom line.”

UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA 2010:
Undiminished interest in international high technology

Russian trade fair for the packaging industry puts its money on quality and expertise

UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA, the international trade fair for packaging machinery, packaging production and packaging material, will open its doors in the Moscow exhibition centre Krasnaja Presnja from 26 - 29 January 2010. In spite of the effects of the global financial crisis, which has also hit Russia and neighbouring regions, the signs for the future indicate cautious optimism.

For instance, experts predict that Russia will experience economic growth in the years ahead, making it one of the most important consumer markets worldwide. The Russian population is striving for a higher standard of living and the Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association within the VDMA emphasised the great interest and the unrelenting demand for high quality equipment from the West, even if some investments have had to be postponed for the time being. Measures put in place by the Russian government have also been helpful in bringing about an upturn, for example, the abolishment of the import sales tax on a total of 200 types of machinery and equipment, including many used in the packaging industry, agreed this summer. The beneficiaries of this tax relief, which can account for as much as 18 percent of the price of a machine*, include manufacturers of injection moulding machines, vacuum forming machines and sleeve wrapping machines. read more

UPAKOVKA / UPAK ITALIA 2009

The financial crisis is reverberating across worldwide markets and affects almost every sector of the economy. No surprise then that there was considerable concern in Moscow which recently hosted the INTERPLASTICA and UPAKOVKA trade shows. However, end results turned out to be more positive than expected.

UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA: Even in hard times, the Russian packaging market offers a wealth of opportunities

Moscow trade fair records high levels of visitor interest and satisfied international exhibitor companies

The effects of the global financial and economic crises have dampened demand on the Russian packaging market for the moment but by no means brought it to a complete standstill. Demand for packaging remains high and interest in innovative technologies and materials for production is unwavering. Despite the current difficulties, Russia is still set to become one of the world’s biggest consumer markets. Experts predict that, at the latest by 2025, the country will enter this league. Packaging manufacturers in the Russian Federation need to invest in order to meet the expectations of customers in such sectors as food, confectionery, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Unsurprisingly, keen interest was registered in UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA 2009, the International Trade Fair Machinery and Equipment for the Manufacture of Packaging, Packaging Machinery, Confectionery Machinery, Packaging and Packaging Aids, Logistics. Jointly staged between 27 and 30 January, INTERPLASTICA 2009, the International Trade Fair Plastics and Rubber, and the premier trade fair for the packaging industry in Russia together welcomed 20,500 trade visitors from all corners of the CIS and its neighbours. A total of about 900 exhibitors rented a net area of 19,000 square metres to showcase their offerings. Visitors’ far-reaching decisionmaking powers, their pre-fair preparations and targeted enquiries impressed exhibitors and revealed real interest in placing orders. The general tenor of exhibitor responses was one of surprise at the wealth of intensive negotiations which promise good post-fair business.

  Welcome to the worldwide market
Above-average economic growth, a steady increase in the gross domestic product, a capital investment surplus with double-digit percentage points and annual wages that rise by 10 per cent each year – Russia continues to be in the league of dynamically expanding national economies. Its growing welfare is reaching ever widening groups of the population, thus increasing the number of people who are adopting a western lifestyle and buying habits. Current developments are therefore promising a good future with secure growth for the consumer goods industry and consequently also for the packaging industry as a sector which adds that increasingly coveted attractiveness to day-to-day products on the shelves.

  Moscow - the beautiful stranger
If you take a stroll through the streets of Moscow today, you will quickly see that a new era has commenced in this giant nation.
The people in the streets, restaurants and shops now convey a Western attitude towards life. While the metropolis on the banks of the river Moskva appears familiar, it also presents us with a completely new image. If you take a look along the river towards the cupolas of the Kremlin, turn your eyes across the expanse of the Red Square towards the colourful roofs of St Basil’s Cathedral and you will detect a touch of secretive strangeness.
